Police Officer Hospitalized with Burns After Faulty Phone Explodes in His Pocket
A police officer in Murang’a County narrowly escaped a life-threatening incident after a mobile phone explosion left him with burns on his thigh.
Constable Simon Chepkirwok, a member of the DCI Mathioya team, was on duty alongside three colleagues when the terrifying event unfolded on the morning of Thursday, September 5.
The officers were en route to Kinangop, Nyandarua County, to carry out official duties when the unexpected explosion occurred. According to the police report, the mobile phone, a Techno BF1, which Constable Chepkirwok had placed in his left front trouser pocket, suddenly burst into flames.
“It has been reported by Cpl John Anyimo, PC Simon Chepkirwok, PC Wilson Nyaga, and PC Cornelius Kembo, all of DCI Mathioya, that while they were travelling from Mathioya to Kinangop on official duty, the mobile phone ‘make; Techno BF1’ the property of PC Simon Chepkirwok which was in his left front trouser pocket burst in flames and burnt him on the left thigh,” read an excerpt of the police report.
The explosion left Chepkirwok with burns on his left thigh, prompting his colleagues to act swiftly. The injured officer was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital in Kenol, where he received medical attention. Fortunately, after treatment, he was discharged and is now reported to be out of danger.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of mobile devices, particularly in high-stress environments such as law enforcement.
The officers collected the remains of the phone for further examination to determine the exact cause of the explosion. It remains unclear whether the malfunction was due to a manufacturing defect or some other factor.
As investigations continue, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential hazards associated with everyday technology. The DCI Mathioya team is expected to provide more information once the examination of the phone is completed, and safety measures will likely be reviewed to prevent such incidents in the future.
