Family of Missing Kenyan Cop in Haiti Denies His Death
Confusion and anxiety grip the family of Benedict Kabiru, a Kenyan police officer who went missing after an ambush by suspected gang members in Haiti’s Pont-Sande area on Tuesday. While some reports suggest he may have died, his family remains adamant that he is still alive, despite having no contact for two days.
Family Holds Onto Hope
Kabiru’s loved ones in Thamanda Village, Kikuyu, Kiambu County, are steadfast in their hope. His wife, Miriam Watimu, dismissed claims of his death, stating, “Many police officers came to our residence yesterday. I asked them whether my husband was dead, but they insisted he had just gone missing.”
His mother, Jecinta Wanjiku, echoed this sentiment, recounting how she first learned about her son’s disappearance. “I got the news from the Kikuyu Sub-County AP Commander, who told me that my son had gone on a mission and went missing.”
Last Conversations with Kabiru
The family last heard from Kabiru over the weekend when he informed them of his night patrol duties. He had always ensured his family remained comfortable despite his demanding role in the Multinational Security Operation team in Haiti.
“The last time I spoke to my son was on Saturday. He told me he would come and settle me because I live in rentals. We had agreed on that, and then yesterday, I heard he was missing,” Wanjiku recalled.
His wife, Watimu, shared a heartfelt story about his thoughtfulness. “I had told him the woofer at home wasn’t working well, but he had already ordered one online as a surprise. The woofer arrived, and we were supposed to talk yesterday so I could tell him how it was. Instead, we were told he is missing.”
The Haiti Mission and Mysterious Disappearance
Kabiru, a 34-year-old father of one, had embraced the Haiti mission after being selected by his superiors. A dedicated officer since joining the police service in 2016, he brought critical skills as a driver, mechanic, and bomb disposal expert to the Border Patrol Unit.
According to a statement from the Multinational Security Support Mission, Kabiru went missing while responding to a distress call from Haiti police officers. Their vehicle had gotten stuck in the Pont-Sande area before they were ambushed by suspected gang members.
Conflicting Reports Spark Concerns
Despite the family’s firm belief that Kabiru is only missing, an official statement from the Haiti Presidential Transitional Council has raised concerns. The council’s post on its X platform referenced an officer who died during an insecurity incident, though it did not explicitly confirm Kabiru’s fate.
For now, his family, friends, and fellow officers can only wait, hoping for clarity and, above all, his safe return.
