Video: Irony as President Ruto Dances to ‘Anguka Nayo,’ After Gachagua’s Impeachment
In an unexpected moment of irony, President William Ruto was seen dancing to the hit song Anguka Nayo during the Mashujaa Day celebrations on Sunday, October 20, in Kwale County.
The event, held at the newly constructed Kwale Stadium, was significant not only because of the national celebrations but also due to the absence of the recently impeached Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua.
During the entertainment session, the musical duo behind Anguka Nayo, known as Wadagliz, took to the stage and delivered a stellar performance. Their song, which has racked up over 7.8 million views on YouTube since its release in July 2024, has become a cultural sensation, particularly among Kenya’s Gen Z.
As the catchy chorus echoed through the stadium, President Ruto, seemingly caught in the moment, stood up and began moving to the rhythm. The sight of the head of state dancing to a song that was once considered the anthem of protests against his government struck many as deeply ironic. The song had gained popularity at the height of youth-led protests opposing the controversial Finance Bill, which many felt would overburden an already struggling population.
Observers couldn’t help but draw comparisons between Ruto’s dance and the recent antics of ousted Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Just a week before his impeachment, Gachagua had also been spotted dancing to Anguka Nayo in Karen Mall. Flanked by his wife, Dorcas, and surrounded by a group of enthusiastic supporters, Gachagua had joined a famous Asian influencer in the viral dance, despite being embroiled in a fierce political struggle.
Amidst the entertainment, the President also used the Mashujaa Day platform to announce a KSh 720 million cheque for Jua Kali artisans from Kibera. The funds will go towards supporting the affordable housing project, a key initiative of his administration.
For many Kenyans, Ruto’s choice of dance was both a surprising and symbolic moment, highlighting the President’s ability to connect with the youth even as his government faces ongoing scrutiny.
