Milimani Magistrate Zena Jalenga Passes Away After Illness

The Judiciary and legal fraternity is in mourning following the death of Honorable Zena Atetwe Rashid Jalenga, a resident magistrate at the Milimani Commercial Court in Nairobi. Jalenga passed away early on Sunday, October 20, after a long and private battle with an undisclosed illness.

Chief Justice Martha Koome confirmed the tragic news, sharing her deep sorrow and paying tribute to the late magistrate’s remarkable service to the nation. In her statement, Koome emphasized Jalenga’s dedication to justice and her enduring commitment to upholding the rule of law.

“It is with a profound sense of loss and sadness that I announce the death of Hon. Zena Atetwe Rashid Jalenga, Resident Magistrate, Milimani Commercial Court, which occurred early in the morning of October 20, 2024, following a long illness bravely borne,” CJ Koome announced. She went on to praise Jalenga’s professional excellence, saying, “Hon. Jalenga exhibited a firm commitment to the cause of justice and the rule of law, serving people from all walks of life with fairness and dedication.”

CJ Koome also highlighted Jalenga’s unwavering dedication to the values enshrined in Kenya’s Constitution, encouraging others to follow in her footsteps. “On my own behalf and that of the Judiciary fraternity, I extend heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones,” Koome expressed in her heartfelt tribute. “We pray that the Almighty God grants us the strength to navigate this difficult period and rests her soul in eternal peace.”

Zena Atetwe Rashid Jalenga was not only a key figure in the legal community but also a staunch advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities. She served as a board member of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), a state corporation established to promote equal opportunities and protect the rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs).

Her impressive academic background included a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Nairobi (UoN) and a Postgraduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law, further underscoring her deep commitment to legal excellence.

This devastating loss comes just a week after former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga buried his son, Athman Mutunga, who passed away following four surgeries. The Judiciary remains in a period of sorrow as it copes with these profound losses.
