Woman Fights for Life in Migori Hospital After Jilted Lover Chops Off Hands
In a horrifying incident that has shocked the residents of Rapogi village in Uriri Sub-County, Migori County, a woman is fighting for her life after her jilted lover brutally attacked her, chopping off her hands and severely injuring her son. The attacker, who later died by suicide, unleashed his violent rage following a domestic dispute that had been simmering for months.
The victim, Rose Odhiambo, is currently receiving treatment at Migori County Referral Hospital. Recalling the tragic evening, Rose shared that she was preparing supper with her children after a long day on the farm when the unthinkable happened.
“I was living with him for three years since my husband died, but when he decided to bring his daughter to live with us, I knew I had to leave,” Rose recounted. The decision to bring the stepdaughter into their home had created significant tension, culminating in the man’s increasingly hostile behavior.
Rose revealed that the man had thrown rotten eggs at her and even cut her clothes hanging on the line. Despite reporting these incidents to the village elder, no substantial action was taken. “I used to report the incidents to the village elder who never took any action,” she said. It wasn’t until the village elder found the man waiting for her with a machete that he took Rose’s concerns seriously and warned her to be careful.
The village elder reported the matter to the area chief, who summoned the man. Although he admitted to the feud and asked for forgiveness, no one anticipated the brutal attack that was to follow.
“My daughter had gone to watch TV at a neighboring home. I told my son to prepare the morning tea. Before he could finish, I dozed off. Suddenly, I heard a loud thud and thought my son had fallen with the thermos. This is the time I realized that he had hit my son with a machete,” Rose said, describing the horrifying moment. Her son sustained deep cuts to his eye, head, and arm.
The attacker then turned on Rose, chopping off her right arm. As she tried to escape, she fell at the door, where he continued his vicious assault, nearly severing her other arm. Rose, the sole breadwinner for her family, was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Uriri Sub-County Police Commander Enrico Lyomu confirmed the incident, stating that the assailant died by suicide the following day at the home of a lawyer where he worked. “The young man feared for his life when he heard that the public wanted to lynch him,” Lyomu remarked.
