Why Eric Omondi Donned a Buibui During Parallel Mashujaa Day Event
Renowned Kenyan comedian Eric Omondi has explained the surprising reasons behind his decision to don a buibui during a parallel Mashujaa Day celebration held at Uhuru Park.
Omondi, who is known for his bold social and political activism, had organized the event to honour protesters who were fatally shot during demonstrations against the controversial finance bill.
Speaking out after reports surfaced of his alleged abduction during the event, Omondi confirmed that he was safe and revealed the real story behind his unusual attire. “I am free,” he began.
“So I was in Uhuru Park the whole morning but I was disguised because I had been given intel and told to be careful. A certain Gen Z policeman called me at 6:30 a.m. and informed me that they had been given orders to deal with me once and for all.”
According to the comedian, he wore the buibui to blend in and avoid being arrested or harmed. His decision to wear the traditional Islamic garment wasn’t just for fashion—it was a calculated move to protect himself. He explained that the early morning warning about a potential attack forced him to take extreme precautions.
However, the peaceful protest took a chaotic turn when police arrived and used tear gas on the crowd, forcing Omondi to abandon his disguise. “Around 12 p.m., the police chased us, and because I couldn’t run in the buibui, I got noticed,” Omondi recounted. “The police were shocked to realise it was me. What’s important is that we showed up and celebrated our heroes.”
A video shared by Omondi online showed him walking past police officers unnoticed, proving that his disguise had initially worked. Despite the tension, Omondi emphasized that his goal of honoring fallen protesters had been achieved. “What’s important is that we stood up for our heroes,” he concluded.
