“Wewe Umekuja Juzi”: Atwoli Schools MP Salasya in Leaked Audio
Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has caused a political stir by leaking a private phone conversation with COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli, in which the veteran trade unionist dispensed advice on navigating Kenya’s intricate political landscape.
In the recorded call, Atwoli urged Salasya to strengthen his alliances with established political heavyweights, including Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga and Cooperative CS Wycliffe Oparanya, to ensure his political longevity.
“Don’t let anyone tell you that as long as you have the support of the youth, you can succeed without the support of Raila, us, Oparanya, and others who were ahead of you. You will be there after us. We must guide you well,” Atwoli was heard advising.
This conversation follows Salasya’s recent shift away from the Azimio coalition, a move that sparked speculation about his political direction. Atwoli emphasized the importance of consulting with Raila before publicly opposing his positions, saying, “If you hear there’s an issue with people like Raila, take your time, go and visit them, and present your case before him. Do not go public before seeing him.”
The two also clashed over the contentious issue of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), which Salasya staunchly supports. Atwoli, echoing Raila’s stance, dismissed the CDF’s impact on national development.
“You have no history. The devolved system is what has brought the development you see in the country, not CDF. What is CDF? CDF is for you as an MP. We are fighting for generalised development from the central government to the local people,” Atwoli remarked.
Salasya fired back, defending CDF as critical for localized development, asserting that it bridges gaps often left by devolved units.
The phone call also delved into the Adani scandal, with Atwoli commending President William Ruto for cancelling the deal. Salasya, however, signaled his independence, saying he would not blindly follow Raila but hoped Raila would consider advice from his inner circle.
The leaked call has sparked debates, with critics questioning Salasya’s motives for going public while others laud his courage to challenge seasoned politicians.
