Wavinya Ndeti Addresses Being Detained in UK After Trying to Smuggle Ksh 679M
Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has strongly refuted allegations that she was detained in the United Kingdom for attempting to smuggle Ksh679 million into the country.
The rumors, which have been circulating online, claim that Ndeti was involved in a money laundering scheme and was apprehended while trying to smuggle the substantial sum of money. However, the governor has dismissed these accusations as baseless and politically motivated.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Ndeti described the allegations as a deliberate smear campaign orchestrated by her political opponents. “My attention has been drawn to an online smear campaign designed and sponsored by my political detractors. This campaign is aimed at dampening the impact of the transformative work we are doing in Machakos,” Ndeti stated.
She further questioned the absurdity of the claims, pointing out the illogical nature of the accusations. “It is demeaning and an insult to the intelligence of the people of Machakos and Kenya to imagine that I would smuggle hundreds of millions of shillings on my person to the United Kingdom and that I have been detained,” she added, emphasizing the preposterous nature of the allegations.
Ndeti also took the opportunity to assure her supporters of her family’s safety and well-being, stating that neither she nor her family had been involved in any illegal activities abroad. “I can confirm that my family and I are safe and sound and remain in good standing both at home and abroad,” she asserted, addressing concerns that had arisen due to the circulating rumors.
The governor did not shy away from condemning those behind the allegations, accusing them of defamation and the malicious use of electronic media to spread falsehoods. She warned that the misinformation not only tarnishes her reputation but also poses a serious risk to the safety of her family.
“Such malicious misinformation has created perceptions about me and my family members that endanger our lives,” Ndeti warned, before issuing a stern message to the perpetrators: “Let the authors of this narrative be warned that should anything happen to any member of my family or myself, you shall be held personally responsible.”
Despite the controversy, Ndeti reiterated her commitment to delivering transformative projects in Machakos County.
She highlighted the completion of nearly 1,000 projects since August 2022 and celebrated a record revenue collection of Ksh1.7 billion in the fiscal year 2023/2024, the highest ever in the county’s history.
