Viral MCA Kokwas Relives Exam Struggles, Aims for a ‘D-’ in KCSE
At 64, Kipkenyo Ward MCA David Letting, famously known as Kokwas, has completed the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), proving that it’s never too late to chase educational goals.
Kokwas gained national attention for his broken English during a public event, but his recent academic pursuit is now the talk of the town.
In an interview with TUKO.co.ke, Kokwas candidly shared his experience of sitting the challenging KCSE exams. “There was nothing easy about it; the exams were tough, but I didn’t cheat. Even if the results are not great, I know I won’t score an ‘E.’ I’m confident I’ll get a ‘D-,’” he said with optimism.
His most memorable moment? A Geography question about dealing with wild animal attacks. “I answered that I’d construct an electric fence and even mentioned areas affected by such incidents,” he explained. Mathematics, too, was memorable. “As a businessman, I’m sure I got at least two questions correct.”
Kokwas’s educational journey is extraordinary. Having last attended school in 1970 at the ECDE level, he re-enrolled in 2020, scoring 150 marks in KCPE. His latest chapter unfolded at Kwa DC Adult School, where he sat for KCSE alongside ten ward residents, including his daughter, a student at Kapsowar Girls High School.
Overcoming health challenges during the exams, Kokwas secured permission to wear a jacket for warmth. He also witnessed candidates caught cheating but maintained his integrity. “There was no need for me to cheat. My answers came entirely from my thinking. Why would I cheat when I’m not looking for a job?” he remarked.
Support poured in from Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, the County Assembly Speaker, clergy, and locals. Kokwas credited divine guidance for his effort, stating, “God gives wisdom. If I score a ‘D-,’ I’ll have done better than many who never missed a class.”
Kokwas plans a celebration, regardless of his results. “I must celebrate with many people, even if I score an ‘E.’ Staying focused for a month was no small feat,” he concluded.
