Vihiga Governor Wilberforce Ottichilo Faces Backlash Over New Mortuary Launch
Vihiga Governor Wilberforce Ottichilo has ignited a heated debate following the announcement of a new mortuary launch in the county.
Governor Ottichilo, now serving his second term, revealed the news on Facebook, sharing a photo of the modern funeral parlour and stating that it was ready for use. “It’s finally ready. Tomorrow we open doors,” read his post.
Despite the Governor’s attempt to excite the residents, the announcement was met with significant criticism.
Many residents accused him of misplacing priorities, arguing that the county’s resources should first address the pressing needs of Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital (VTRH) and other essential services.
Residents Scold Ottichilo Over Morgue
The post quickly attracted comments from concerned residents who felt that the focus should be on improving healthcare and infrastructure rather than funeral facilities.
Denis Avoga commented, “So you cannot repair roads, put security, ensure good medical services at VTRH, put street lights in towns, but have the audacity of opening mortuaries for us.”
Martin Ikojeri highlighted the contrast with other counties, stating, “When Wamatangi in Kiambu is improving the hospitals and ECDE centres, our Governor is investing in funeral homes.”
Mageto Jaja expressed a similar sentiment, “Rejoicing on opening a morgue is not an achievement of life but the loss of it.”
Jackson Okata also voiced his displeasure, saying, “Instead of investing in the Vihiga Referral Hospital to better its services, you are putting money into building a mortuary.”
While some residents acknowledged the necessity of a mortuary, the prevailing opinion seemed to lean towards prioritizing enhanced healthcare services and infrastructure improvements before such projects.
