Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) employees erupted in joyous celebration upon hearing the news that President William Ruto had canceled the controversial Adani Group deals.

In a video that quickly went viral, KAA staff were seen dancing and singing with unbridled enthusiasm, expressing their gratitude through heartfelt prayers of thanksgiving.

The Adani Group, an Indian conglomerate, had been in talks with the Kenyan government over two major projects: a partnership with KETRACO to revamp the country’s power transmission infrastructure and a deal with KAA to modernize Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). However, in his State of the Nation address on Thursday, November 21, President Ruto revealed that concerns raised about the Adani Group, including counsel from investigators, had prompted him to suspend these imminent contracts.

“The concerns raised about the Adani Group were serious,” Ruto said during his speech. “I have considered all counsel, and with the best interest of Kenyans in mind, I have made the decision to suspend all contracts with Adani Group.” The announcement marked the end of months of speculation and debate over the deal.

Following the announcement, KAA workers took to the corridors of their workplace, singing “Hakuna Mungu kama wewe” (“There is no God like You”) and dancing with joy. The jubilant display of unity and faith in God was a poignant expression of relief and hope for a brighter future.

Onlookers and social media users shared their reactions. “I love how God is answering Kenyans’ prayers,” commented one user, while another added, “Nothing but prayer… best weapons.” Kenyans, particularly those who had followed the deal’s development closely, were quick to celebrate the decision.

Nelson Amenya, the whistleblower who had been vocal about the deal, shared his excitement on Twitter, expressing gratitude that the Adani partnership was no longer a threat. His joy resonated with many Kenyans, who lauded the president for taking action against the deal.

The decision came just hours after Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi had indicated that the Adani-KETRACO deal would proceed, despite the fraud charges facing Adani abroad.
