“Unmarked Cars Are Following Me”: Gachagua Says He Fears For His Life After Ouster
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has decried what he terms as targeted harassment by state operatives, accusing the government of trailing his every move.
In a series of tweets late Wednesday, November 20, Gachagua alleged that unmarked vehicles have been following him around, even staking out his Nairobi residence and his rural home in Nyeri County.
“Security agents in unmarked cars have been following me wherever I go. They are parking at the entrance of my Nairobi residence, taking note of all my visitors, and they trail me whenever I leave the house, even to my rural home in Nyeri,” he revealed.
Gachagua expressed deep concern over his safety, pointing to Kenya’s troubling history of extrajudicial killings and forced disappearances. He said his decision to go public was to hold the government accountable should any harm come his way.
“In this era of extrajudicial killings, forced abductions and disappearances by state agents, I have thought it important to share with Kenyans the harassment and intimidation I am going through, and inform them to hold the state responsible if I am harmed by state agents,” he stated.
The former deputy president, who was ousted from office earlier this year, appeared to direct his frustration at President William Ruto, demanding to be left alone.
“I request the state to leave me alone! You hounded me out of office, and you should now allow me to enjoy my peace as a private citizen,” he said.
Gachagua likened the alleged harassment to tactics employed during the Moi regime to suppress dissent. He also dismissed claims by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), which recently refuted reports of pursuing him, as a mere deflection.
Notably, his remarks follow reports of alleged drama surrounding his visit to the PriestHood Fellowship Church in Kahawa West on November 10, where heightened police activity preceded his appearance.
