Uhuru Kenyatta Joins Influential African Security Forum Board
Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has added another prestigious international role to his already impressive resume by joining the board of the Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa.
Known for his diplomatic influence and deep involvement in peace-building missions, Kenyatta’s appointment to the Forum’s board marks a significant milestone in his post-presidency career. His new position underscores his growing stature as a key player in addressing security and peace challenges across the African continent.
The Tana Forum, recognized as one of Africa’s foremost platforms for addressing peace and security issues, officially welcomed Kenyatta to its board in March 2024.
However, the public announcement was made on September 16, marking a pivotal moment for the Forum as it continues to gather prominent African leaders dedicated to finding solutions to the continent’s most pressing security problems. Kenyatta’s vast experience in governance and diplomacy is expected to greatly benefit the Forum’s mission.
In his new capacity, Uhuru Kenyatta will play a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of the Forum’s annual discussions. The next meeting is scheduled to take place from October 25-27, 2024, in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, under the theme “Africa in an Evolving Global Order.” This gathering will bring together leaders from various sectors across Africa to develop homegrown solutions for the continent’s security issues.
Kenyatta’s appointment has been widely praised, with many seeing it as a logical extension of his longstanding commitment to Pan-Africanism and regional stability.
During his two terms as Kenya’s president, Kenyatta was a vocal advocate for African-led solutions to conflicts, and his influence extended far beyond Kenya’s borders. In his new role at the Tana Forum, he will continue this legacy by providing strategic oversight and helping to shape the broader security agenda for the region.
“The appointment of President Kenyatta is a critical move for the Tana Forum. His leadership and experience are exactly what we need to address Africa’s evolving security challenges,” said Olusegun Obasanjo, former Nigerian president and the current chair of the Tana Forum.
The Tana Forum’s board is made up of distinguished African leaders, including former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, former Malawian President Joyce Banda, and renowned scholar Professor Patrick Lumumba. Together, this diverse group of leaders is tasked with steering the Forum towards impactful dialogue and meaningful action.
Kenyatta’s new role comes on the heels of his leadership in the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) during South Africa’s 2024 general elections. Appointed by the African Union Commission, Kenyatta led a team of 60 election experts and civil society representatives to oversee the democratic process, which was ultimately declared free and fair in an initial report released on May 31, 2024.
Through these high-level missions, Kenyatta has cemented his reputation as a seasoned diplomat with the ability to navigate complex political landscapes. His appointment to the Tana Forum is seen as yet another example of how African leadership is turning to seasoned statesmen to provide critical guidance on matters of peace and security.
As the Tana Forum’s October meeting approaches, all eyes will be on Kenyatta to see how his strategic vision and leadership will help shape the discussions. The forum is expected to address a range of security challenges, from terrorism and conflict to the effects of climate change on regional stability.
This appointment marks another chapter in Kenyatta’s evolving legacy as a statesman. Even after his presidency, Kenyatta remains focused on creating a stable and secure future for Africa, with his work at the Tana Forum expected to be yet another milestone in his journey of leadership.
