Ugenya Mp David Ochieng to Table Motion Against IG Masengeli for Ignoring Court Orders

In a bold statement made on CitizenDayBreak, Ugenya MP David Ochieng threatened to take drastic action against Acting Inspector General of Police, Gilbert Masengeli, following a series of contemptuous actions.

“If acting Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli doesn’t resign, I will table a motion in Parliament for his removal from office. It should be scandalous for a police boss to refuse to obey a court order,” declared Ochieng, expressing his frustration over Masengeli’s defiance.

The controversy surrounding Masengeli erupted after he was sentenced to six months in prison for contempt of court. Justice Lawrence Mugambi handed down the ruling last Friday, condemning the police chief for repeatedly ignoring court summonses related to the case of three missing individuals: Jamil Longton, his brother Aslam Longton, and activist Bob Njagi. The trio had been allegedly abducted during the Gen Z-led anti-government protests on August 19, 2024, by individuals believed to be police officers.

Masengeli’s refusal to appear before the court has been nothing short of flagrant. Over a period of several weeks, he snubbed seven separate summonses, prompting Justice Mugambi to take a firm stance.

In his ruling, Mugambi directed Masengeli to report to the Commissioner General of Prisons to begin serving his sentence. Should Masengeli fail to comply, the court has ordered the Cabinet Secretary for Interior to enforce the ruling.

The gravity of the situation has drawn widespread criticism, with MP Ochieng leading the charge for accountability. His ultimatum – that Masengeli must resign or face a motion for his removal in Parliament – has placed additional pressure on the embattled acting police chief. The MP’s remarks highlight the broader implications of Masengeli’s defiance, which has caused a ripple of concern within the judiciary.

Additionally, Justice Mugambi, who delivered the controversial ruling, revealed unsettling developments regarding his safety. He reported that senior police officers had made suspicious inquiries about his whereabouts, even contacting his driver and bodyguard. In response, Mugambi has been assigned heightened security to ensure his protection.

As the deadline for Masengeli’s resignation approaches, all eyes are on Parliament, where Ochieng’s motion could spark a dramatic political showdown.
