Two Kenyan Politicians Die in Fatal Road Accident in Uganda
Two Kenyan politicians have lost their lives in a devastating road accident in Uganda, highlighting concerns over road safety in the region.
Reports indicate that the accident, which occurred along the Moroto-Napak road at Tapaach, claimed the lives of four individuals. The deceased have been identified as Philemon Lotudo, Elijah Lopuke, Jackson Kariwoi, and Ben Ikong.
Images from the crash site paint a grim picture, with the black SUV carrying the politicians reduced to a mangled wreck. According to eyewitness accounts, Kariwoi and Ikong died instantly, while Lotudo succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital. The fourth victim passed away while receiving medical attention.
Notably, one of the deceased had contested for the Kapenguria MP seat in the 2022 elections, while another had vied for an MCA position. Lopuke had recently gained political traction, securing the UDA chairmanship for Alale Ward in West Pokot in May 2024.
Confirming the incident, West Pokot County Commissioner Khaliff Abdullahi stated that authorities had launched investigations to determine the cause of the crash. A critical detail emerging from the reports is that the vehicle involved belonged to the West Pokot County government.
Efforts to repatriate the bodies required cooperation between Kenyan and Ugandan authorities. The remains of the deceased were transported to Cherangany Mortuary in Kitale for further arrangements.
It has also been revealed that the victims were part of a delegation accompanying Pokot South MP David Pkosing on a cross-border tour between Kenya and Uganda. Sook Ward MCA Martin Komongiro narrowly survived the tragedy and was rushed to Eldoret for specialized treatment.
