Tragedy Strikes Oyugis: Easter Disco Turns Deadly as Revellers Electrocuted
What was meant to be a night of fun and celebration on Easter Friday ended in unspeakable tragedy in Oyugis Town, Homa Bay County.
Two young men lost their lives after being electrocuted during a disco event at a local nightclub in Ragama estate. The heartbreaking incident also left a young woman seriously injured.
The horrific event occurred around 2 a.m. as revelers danced in the open field inside the club premises. Among the deceased was a minor, Antipus Odongo, while the identity of the second victim is yet to be confirmed by authorities.
According to Oyugis West Sub-Location Assistant Chief, Warren Omollo, the two victims were electrocuted when they accidentally stepped on a live generator wire. The cable, which was used to power the sound system for the disco night, was exposed to the open and made even more dangerous by the ongoing rainfall.
Omollo explained that the area where the revelers were dancing was wet due to rain, increasing the risk of electrical shock. The generator wire, reportedly not properly insulated, became a death trap. Tragically, the two young men had no idea they were stepping into danger until it was too late.
A young woman who was with them also stepped on the wire but was lucky to escape with her life. She suffered serious injuries and was quickly rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
Generator electrocution in Homa Bay is now under active investigation by local authorities. Rachuonyo South Sub-County Police Commander, Philemon Saera, confirmed the incident and revealed that several people linked to the event are being questioned.
The police have summoned the nightclub manager, the disco event organizer, and the individual who hired the DJ and sound equipment. Investigators are focusing on determining whether negligence or failure to meet safety standards contributed to the tragic accident.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to Rachuonyo South Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where postmortem examinations are expected to be conducted. These results will help in establishing the exact cause of death and may be critical in the ongoing probe.
Local residents and leaders have expressed their shock and sadness over the incident. Many are calling for stricter safety regulations, especially during large public gatherings where electrical equipment is in use. The lack of proper wiring and oversight has raised concerns about the risks people face in entertainment venues, particularly in rural areas.
The assistant chief noted that it was raining at the time, and the open nature of the dance floor made the situation worse. “There should have been better safety precautions,” he said, “especially with live electricity running through exposed wires.”
Police have assured the public that thorough investigations will be conducted and those found responsible will face legal consequences. Meanwhile, the nightclub where the incident happened may face temporary closure as authorities examine whether it meets licensing and safety standards.
This tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the dangers posed by poor electrical handling and the importance of proper safety measures in public venues. As the families of the victims mourn their loved ones, residents hope that this incident will push for reforms and more stringent enforcement of safety protocols.
