Three Suspects in Custody for Attacking Woman at Ex-Husband’s Funeral
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have apprehended three individuals following a disturbing incident where a widow was assaulted during a burial ceremony.
This arrest, made on Monday evening, followed the circulation of a viral video depicting the woman being coerced into participating in traditional rituals against her will.
The distressing video captured a group of men forcibly dragging the woman and compelling her to throw soil into her former husband’s grave.
According to the DCI, the incident transpired on March 21st, amid a family dispute involving the woman, who had been separated from her husband for several years.
After a prolonged period of no contact, the woman was contacted by her former mother-in-law, who requested her presence, along with her children, at the funeral following her ex-husband’s tragic death in a road accident.
At the burial, the woman was ambushed by her former in-laws, who insisted she adhere to the burial custom of casting soil into the grave.
Upon her refusal, the in-laws reportedly turned violent, accusing her of culpability in her ex-husband’s death.
Following the incident, law enforcement swiftly intervened, initiating an investigation. The three suspects were tracked and apprehended in the Mwongorisi sub-location in Nyamira.
The suspects were taken to Kiambere Police Station, where they underwent questioning before being charged in court.
Simultaneously, detectives have launched a further investigation to identify and capture other individuals involved in this troubling event.
National Police Service (NPS) Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga condemned the incident as deeply regrettable, noting the absence of civility and basic human dignity.
“The National Police Service has observed with extreme concern a distressing video that has gained traction on social media, showing a woman being physically assaulted at what is believed to be a burial ceremony,” Nyaga stated.
“We express our gratitude to the public for their valuable information, which facilitated these arrests. As a Service, we remain dedicated to upholding law and order,” he added.
