Three Civilians Arrested Over Blogger Albert Ojwang’s Death in Police Custody

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has taken into custody three individuals connected to the troubling death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang’. He passed away while being held at the Nairobi Central Police Station.

The suspects—Gin Ammitou Abwao, Collins Karani Ireri, and Brian Mwaniki Njue—were also in custody at the same police station when Ojwang’ was detained. According to IPOA, these three allegedly followed police orders to torture Ojwang’, which ultimately resulted in his death.

Initially, they were released shortly after the incident, but they were re-arrested on Sunday. Each suspect is now being held separately at Kilimani, Muthangari, and Kileleshwa police stations. IPOA has stated that they will appear in court on Monday, alongside Nairobi Central OCS Samson Taalam, who is currently being held at Lang’ata Police Station.

The lawyer representing the suspects mentioned that they had been held for five days under a general application but were eventually released without any formal charges being filed against them.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has gathered crucial CCTV footage related to the case. However, some segments of the footage appear to have been tampered with, which raises suspicions that someone may have attempted to conceal the truth. Investigators are currently sifting through more than 36 hours of video to reconstruct the events leading up to and following Ojwang’s death.

Additionally, two more officers, including Deputy OCS Samuel Ng’ang’a, who was on duty that night, were seen on camera transporting Ojwang to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Both officers are currently unaccounted for.

Ojwang’s widow, Nevenina Onyango, shared her memories of their last phone call while he was being moved from Homa Bay to Nairobi. She recalled that he sounded frightened and extremely concerned about his safety.

“I never believed such a thing could happen to me,” she said tearfully. “Albert was asking if he was safe because he wasn’t sure.”

Ojwang’s father, Meshack Opiyo, also questioned the circumstances surrounding his son’s arrest and detention.

“Maswali yangu bado yako pale pale,” he said. “Ni kwa nini kijana yangu alishikwa? Mashtaka ni yapi kwa kijana yangu?”

The family is calling for swift, transparent investigations and full accountability for those responsible.

“It is sad — so sad,” said Nevenina. “We know we can’t bring his life back, but justice must be served.”
