Thika Chief Magistrate Caught with KSh 2M Hidden in Laptop Bag
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has apprehended Stellah Atambo, the Chief Magistrate of Thika Law Courts, amid investigations into alleged corrupt practices during her judicial duties.
Atambo came under scrutiny following numerous complaints alleging she solicited and accepted bribes in exchange for favorable case outcomes.
To investigate these claims, EACC detectives initiated an inquiry that led to a raid on Atambo’s residence.
The raid yielded approximately KSh 2 million, suspected to be the gains of corruption. The EACC alleges that Atambo received these funds through Patrick Njeri Muriithi, the court clerk under her supervision.
On Thursday, March 13, EACC officers discovered KSh 2,070,000 in cash, concealed within a laptop bag, at Atambo’s home. “The commission, after acquiring search warrants, executed searches at the homes of the chief magistrate and the clerk to gather pertinent documents and information to aid the investigations. A total of KSh 2,070,000 in cash, suspected to be proceeds of corruption, was found inside a laptop bag at Atambo’s residence, along with several documents relevant to the investigations,” stated the EACC.
Atambo and Muriithi were subsequently detained and transported to the EACC headquarters for questioning.
Through her legal representatives, Atambo has refuted the accusations, asserting that the recovered cash belongs to her husband.
The EACC has recently intensified its efforts to combat corruption among public servants.
