Tanzania Helps DCI Nab Suspects in Richard Otieno Murder Case
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested three additional suspects on Sunday, February 23, in connection with the murder of Nakuru activist Richard Otieno, also known as Molo President.
A statement released by the DCI on Monday, February 24, revealed that Tanzanian authorities helped in the arrest of two of the suspects. The arrests came after a detailed forensic examination of the crime scene by the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB), which helped link the suspects to the crime.
Following this, detectives from the Homicide Investigations Bureau worked tirelessly to apprehend all those involved, and while several suspects remain at large, three were arrested.
According to the DCI’s statement, two of the suspects fled to Majahida in Tanzania’s Bariadi District to escape capture after the murder. However, Tanzanian law enforcement captured them and sent them back to Kenya on February 21.
Upon their return, the suspects were re-arrested, along with a third accomplice still in Kenya.
Investigations by the police have shown that the suspects were transported from Molo to Elburgon on January 18 to carry out the murder. As the hunt for other suspects intensifies, the three arrested suspects are expected to appear before the Nakuru Chief Magistrate’s Court on Monday, February 24, for custodial orders.
This marks the second round of arrests in connection to the shocking murder. Elburgon residents had earlier taken to the streets, marching with Otieno’s body after it was held at the mortuary, to protest the crime.
The first five arrests were made earlier, on February 3, following a multi-agency investigation that also involved forensic evidence.
According to the DCI, three of the five suspects were directly involved in the murder, while two others were bodaboda riders who transported them to and from the crime scene.
It was also noted that two of the suspects had been previously arrested for assaulting Otieno in late 2024 and had received probation sentences.
