Suspect in Briton’s Murder Dies by Suicide
A man wanted for the murder of British businessman Campbell Scott has died by suicide, according to police.
Samuel Musembi, the suspect, was believed to have driven the vehicle that transported Scott’s body from Nairobi to Makongo Forest in Makueni county. Musembi had reportedly been hiding at a relative’s home in Dandora, Nairobi.
Investigators stated that Musembi had also sought temporary lodging at a friend’s house in Dandora, telling the friend he needed to rest away from his own home for unknown reasons. The friend informed authorities that he left for work on Tuesday morning, leaving Musembi resting in the house. He noted that Musembi appeared uneasy.
Upon returning in the evening, the friend found the door locked from the inside and broke it open. He discovered Musembi lying on the bed with foam coming from his mouth and nose, and blood flowing from his neck. Musembi had a stab wound. The friend, after notifying family and neighbors, rushed Musembi to Mama Lucy hospital, but they were turned away due to the severity of the case. Musembi was then taken to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he died on Wednesday morning while receiving treatment.
“The pressure on him was too great. He died by suicide,” a police officer involved in the investigation stated. Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin confirmed Musembi’s death, possibly by suicide. “An autopsy will reveal more about the cause of death,” Amin said. Preliminary investigations suggest that Musembi first attempted suicide by ingesting a poisonous substance, and then stabbed himself in the neck and other areas.
The family and hospital later informed the police of these developments. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) was preparing to collect Musembi’s DNA and fingerprints, and also intensifying the search for the man who had housed him. The host has not yet been located.
On March 7, the DCI had asked the public for information leading to the arrest of Musembi and two other suspects, Benard Mbunga Mbusu and Alphonse Munyao Kilewa, also known as Edu. “The suspects are linked to the brutal murder of 58-year-old Briton, Campbell Scott, whose partially decomposed body was found on February 22, 2025, in Makongo Forest, Makueni Sub-County. Scott had arrived in the country just days earlier to attend a business conference,” the DCI stated.
It is alleged that the suspects tricked Scott, who was in Nairobi, into a business meeting before he disappeared on February 17 and was subsequently murdered. They are accused of tying up his body, placing it in a car, and driving over 100 kilometers to dump it in a thicket in Makueni.
Two other suspects, Alex Mutua Kithuka and Albunus Mutinda Nzioki, are in custody and assisting with the investigation. They were presented in court last Monday. The court was informed that preliminary investigations indicate Scott was taken to Mutua’s house in Pipeline, Nairobi, where he is believed to have been killed.
According to the prosecution, the two suspects allegedly attempted to use Scott’s credit cards in Nairobi, Voi, and Mombasa. They were arrested on March 1 along the Nairobi-Mombasa Road. It was discovered that the first suspect had already moved his belongings from his Pipeline residence. Mbusu, who is still at large, is said to be the man captured on CCTV with Scott on February 16, before his disappearance. Detectives have claimed that Mbusu has a criminal history dating back to 2018.
