Sultana Star Winnie Bwire Ndubi ‘Dida’ Passes Away After Brave Battle with Cancer
Actress Winnie Bwire Ndubi, renowned for her role as ‘Dida’ in the beloved Citizen TV series Sultana, has passed away. The actress succumbed to breast cancer on September 5, 2024, while undergoing treatment in Turkey, as confirmed by her family.
In a deeply emotional statement, the family shared their sorrow: “It is with heavy hearts and humble acceptance of God’s will that we announce Winfred Bwire Ndubi lost her battle to cancer on 5th September, 2024, while undergoing treatment in Turkey.”
They further expressed their gratitude to those who supported her through her illness, stating, “We thank you all for your overwhelming support, prayers, and generous giving during her treatment. We will share more details in due course. God bless you all.”
Bwire’s struggle with cancer began over three years ago, marked by persistent swelling and discomfort under her armpits. Initially mistaken for a common infection, the symptoms persisted, leading her to seek further medical consultation.
“I was first told by a doctor that there were no cancerous cells. But the pain continued, so I went to a gynaecologist who then detected the cancer through a biopsy,” Bwire recounted in a March interview on Citizen TV.
Her diagnosis brought with it a wave of fear and uncertainty, particularly concerning her role in Sultana. “I thought I was going to be fired. I did not think I could continue filming and still receive medication due to the misconception that chemotherapy is traumatic,” Bwire shared. Despite these concerns, she found strength and hope in her role on the show.
Bwire’s battle was intense, and her condition worsened after filming for Sultana ended. A PET scan revealed the cancer had spread to her brain, bones, and other organs. “After wrapping up Sultana, the cancer got worse. The PET scan showed it had spread,” she said. Her treatment focused on brain cancer, which severely impacted her balance and coordination. “My doctor suggested addressing the brain cancer first as it affected my quality of life.”
The actress spoke candidly about her symptoms and treatment, describing constant headaches, vomiting, and memory issues. Despite the rigorous treatment and its toll on her body, Bwire remained hopeful, buoyed by the support of her family and fans. She highlighted the stigma surrounding cancer, stating, “That stigma puts us down and people do not see you for anything more than cancer.”
Bwire’s journey, marked by courage and resilience, inspired many and brought a poignant awareness to the realities of cancer treatment.
