Sonko Breaks Silence on Reports of Vietnam Travel for Nduta’s Case

Mike Sonko, the former Nairobi Governor, has denied claims that he traveled to Vietnam to help stop Margaret Nduta’s execution. He stated that he is still in Kenya, and a video circulating online, which supposedly showed him in Vietnam, is false.

The video, shared on TikTok, suggested Sonko had gone to Vietnam to meet with government officials there about Nduta, a 37-year-old Kenyan woman convicted of drug trafficking and facing execution.

Sonko clarified that the clip, which allegedly placed him in Vietnam, was actually from a photo taken in his Nairobi office with Chinese officials. “I’ve seen a false story on TikTok saying I’m in Vietnam to stop Margaret Nduta’s execution. A blogger is claiming I’m there,” Sonko said.

“This is not Vietnam. You can see my office watch and background in the photo. The people are Chinese, not Vietnamese,” he added.

Despite clearing up the confusion, Sonko urged President William Ruto’s government to step in and apprehend the individual who helped Nduta travel to Vietnam.

He suggested that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and other investigative bodies should examine Nduta’s phone records to identify her accomplices.

Sonko’s statements followed news that the Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary told Citizen TV that Kenyan embassy representatives from Bangkok, Thailand, had traveled to Hanoi, Vietnam, to try and prevent Margaret Nduta’s execution.

Nduta was sentenced to death in Vietnam for drug trafficking and was scheduled for execution around 4:30 pm yesterday.

The PS, speaking on Monday, March 17, explained that Kenyan ambassadors from Thailand went to Vietnam to negotiate for mercy for the 37-year-old.

Sing’Oei also revealed that Kenya’s representatives in Thailand would request a delay in Nduta’s execution to allow for more talks between the Kenyan and Vietnamese governments.
