Sifuna Slams Joho, Promises to Call Him to Senate for Grilling Over Threats to Bloggers
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has announced that the Senate will summon Mining Cabinet Secretary, Ali Hassan Joho, to explain recent statements he made.
In an interview with Radio Citizen on Wednesday, Sifuna criticized Joho for forgetting that as a government minister, his words carry more weight than when he was a politician.
Sifuna said, “We will call Joho to the Senate buildings to explain why he threatened Kenyans. The issue is that Joho seems to have forgotten he is no longer a politician or governor, but a minister. As a minister, his statements are taken seriously.”
The senator emphasized that Joho, as a government official, must be careful with his words and be accountable for them. He added, “We will call him for a thorough questioning to understand why he is threatening those who are critical of the government.”
Despite the Senate going into recess until February 2025, Sifuna assured that they would not forget and would summon Joho once they resume their sessions in February.
Sifuna’s comments came in response to remarks made by Joho in Taita Taveta on Tuesday. Joho criticized social media users who were attacking President William Ruto’s administration.
He warned bloggers who criticize Ruto’s government, saying, “A country cannot be built through the internet. It cannot be built by people who spend their time on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Let me put them on notice: if they bring us trouble, we can also bring trouble.”
Joho’s comments were triggered by the public outcry that led President Ruto to cancel two private partnership deals with the controversial Indian conglomerate, Adani.
In his remarks in Taita Taveta, President Ruto also expressed frustration with the criticism of his projects, saying, “There is an evil spirit of opposition—opposing everything,” and he criticized those opposing various government initiatives like affordable housing, cattle vaccination, and university reforms.
