Shock as Six Students Killed Crossing Kibwezi-Kitui Road, Probox Driver Arrested
A tragic road accident on Friday morning claimed the lives of six students at the Witoo Shopping Centre, along the Kitui-Kibwezi highway in Kitui County. The devastating incident has sent shockwaves across the community, with families and residents mourning the sudden loss of the young lives.
According to police reports, the six victims included three primary school pupils and three secondary school students from nearby schools. The students were reportedly attempting to cross the busy highway when they were struck by a speeding Probox vehicle.
“It was a heartbreaking scene,” a witness at the site recounted. “The children were just trying to get across the road, and in a flash, the vehicle came and knocked them down.”
The driver, whose identity remains undisclosed, fled the scene immediately after the accident, further intensifying the tragedy. The police confirmed the driver later surrendered at a nearby station after realizing the gravity of the situation. “He fled after the accident, but later turned himself in at the police station,” said an officer familiar with the case.
The authorities have since arrested the driver and impounded the Probox involved in the accident. A full investigation has been launched to uncover the details surrounding the hit-and-run incident. “We are carrying out a thorough probe into the tragedy, and the vehicle has been impounded for further inspection,” stated the Kitui County Police Commander.
The incident has reignited concerns about the safety of pedestrians, especially students, along the busy Kitui-Kibwezi highway. Community members have voiced frustrations over the lack of proper road safety measures, particularly in areas where children are vulnerable to accidents.
“The government needs to put speed bumps and signs around these school zones. Our children are not safe,” said a local parent.
As investigations continue, the families of the six students are left to grapple with the heartbreaking loss of their loved ones.
