Seven Vehicles Crash on Nairobi-Nakuru Highway

In the early hours of Thursday morning, multiple car accidents on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway resulted in injuries to at least six people and the temporary closure of the busy thoroughfare.

The series of collisions occurred in the Muguga area of Kiambu County, involving at least seven vehicles according to witness accounts and images obtained by Skynews.co.ke.

The initial accident reportedly happened when a stalled vehicle, not visible to oncoming traffic, was struck from behind. This triggered a chain reaction, causing several other vehicles to collide.

In the aftermath, a small Canter-type lorry, which had hit the stalled vehicle, was severely damaged at the front. The white lorry ended up partially on top of the first lorry, which had overturned.

It remains unclear whether the overturned lorry flipped before or after the accident. It was transporting vegetables and bananas, which were scattered across the highway.

A long-distance lorry then smashed into the back of the second Canter-type lorry and was subsequently hit by another lorry from behind.

Fortunately, no fatalities were reported. Police officers from Kikuyu Police Station quickly responded and cleared the road.

This incident follows a similar accident just two days earlier on the Nakuru-Nyahururu Road in Nakuru County.

A lorry carrying construction materials rammed into stationary vehicles, resulting in serious injuries. The lorry’s brakes reportedly failed, leading to a collision with four parked vehicles, including a private car and a matatu.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), road accidents have claimed the lives of 4,282 people from January to November this year.

Among these, pedestrians account for the highest number of deaths at 1,637, followed by motorcyclists at 1,045, passengers at 788, and drivers at 369. Additionally, 372 pillion passengers and 72 pedal cyclists have also lost their lives in road accidents.
