Seven Arrested for Running Brutal Detention Center in Kakamega
In Kakamega’s Makaburini slums, seven individuals have been arrested by police for running an illegal detention center where nine people were held and severely abused. The victims, consisting of both men and women, were forced into a small, dirty room with no proper sanitation or freedom.
Investigations revealed the facility was initially intended to discipline individuals suspected of excessive alcohol consumption within the community. However, it quickly turned into a scheme of extortion and maltreatment.
Detainees were only released after paying KSh 300 to their self-proclaimed “discipline masters.” Those unable to pay endured three days of continuous physical and psychological torment.
One victim described being taken without any explanation, finding themselves locked up with others who were already being assaulted. “They just pulled me from my doorstep, and before I knew it, I was locked inside with other people, and whipped for three days,” the survivor recounted.
Another victim shared how they were forcibly removed from their home while bathing, unaware of their destination. “At midnight, the whips started. They beaten me a lot. My thighs are still sore,” she stated.
Both men and women were confined in an unsanitary mud-walled room without any separation. They were given only one meal per day and had to use a dirty bucket as a toilet. “When pressed, we would use the bucket regardless of who was watching, because we had no option. In the evenings they would bring ugali with sukuma wiki,” the victim explained.
Area residents and eyewitnesses revealed that the group operated without fear, making arbitrary arrests and intimidating anyone who questioned their actions. “If you asked why people were being locked up, they would threaten to detain you as well,” a resident said.
Kakamega Township Assistant Chief Isaac Ayumba confirmed the operation, stating that authorities acted promptly upon receiving a tip about the illegal confinement. “I first went to the local village elder to inquire about the claims. We verified the existence of the detention room and moved in to rescue the victims,” he said. Following the rescue, police and government officials arrested seven suspects, including the village elder who allegedly led the detentions.
Citizen TV reported the arrested suspects as: Emmanuel Nyangweso, Derick Owino, Metrine Olenyo, Brian Obonyo, Johnson Shirava, Koffi Anan, and Charles Kisamani. The suspects now face charges of unlawful confinement, assault, and issuing threats. One of them was also found in possession of bhang.
