Senator Danson Mungatana Reveals Why Ruto is Better Than Kibaki

Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana has ignited a fiery political debate by asserting that Ruto is better than Kibaki in his leadership approach, praising the current president’s hands-on style.

In an interview aired on April 23, 2025, Mungatana contrasted President William Ruto’s governance with that of the late President Mwai Kibaki, claiming the two operated on vastly different wavelengths. He described Ruto as deeply involved in grassroots engagement, while painting Kibaki as a leader who largely delegated responsibilities to his cabinet.

“I have served under both administrations,” Mungatana said. “President Kibaki would often respond to ministerial challenges by saying, ‘You’re paid to solve problems, so go fix them.’ He left the work to his team, which worked then, but it’s not how Ruto functions.”

Mungatana commended Ruto for personally reaching out to Kenyans, noting that he communicates progress directly and visits remote areas. “He’s the first president to spend a night in Wajir and has visited places in Tana River that previous heads of state ignored,” he added.

Backing Mungatana’s sentiment was Soy MP David Kiplagat, who defended Ruto’s administration against critics claiming it hasn’t delivered on key promises. Kiplagat drew historical parallels, saying even Kibaki’s first term was marked by setbacks and political turmoil.

“Ruto hasn’t been in office forever,” Kiplagat argued. “Kibaki didn’t start making impact until his second term. His first term was riddled with divisive politics, including the Banana vs. Orange referendum crisis. We nearly lost the country before the 2007 elections.”

However, not all lawmakers were on board with the glowing praise of Ruto. Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu challenged the comparisons outright, labeling them as inappropriate and misleading.

“It’s wrong to compare Mwai Kibaki with William Ruto,” Nyutu said firmly. “It’s like comparing apples to oranges. Kibaki allowed his ministers to work independently. He never overpromised or engaged in populist giveaways like handing out money in churches.”

Nyutu also questioned claims that the Ruto government has improved the cost of living. “Saying the price of unga has dropped because of government efforts is dishonest. That’s due to good rains, not new policies. Let’s see the dams they’ve built if they’re serious,” he stated.

As the debate unfolds, it reveals deeper tensions among leaders about how success and legacy should be measured in politics. While some applaud Ruto for his direct engagement with citizens, others remain skeptical, urging a more honest assessment based on tangible outcomes.

Mungatana’s remarks may have been meant to uplift the current administration, but they’ve opened a broader discussion about governance styles, accountability, and the importance of comparing presidents on equal terms. As pressure mounts on Ruto to fulfill his pledges, the debate around Ruto better than Kibaki is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
