Senator Cherargei Slams Murkomen, Says He’s Unfit for Interior Role
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has unleashed a scathing critique of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, alleging a profound lack of competence in addressing the nation’s escalating security challenges.
Cherargei’s outburst, posted on X, condemned Murkomen’s handling of recent banditry, terrorism, and violent attacks across the country. He directly questioned Murkomen’s ability to lead, drawing comparisons to his previous tenure as Transport CS.
“What I saw two years ago about CS Murkomen’s incompetence can now be seen! At least incompetence in roads means that it can be fixed later, but incompetence in internal security means lives are lost that cannot be recovered!” Cherargei asserted.
He further suggested that Head of Public Service Felix Koskei’s recent intervention in the North Rift highlighted Murkomen’s shortcomings. “No wonder HOPS (Head of Public Service) Koskei had to go and confront bandits in the North Rift over the weekend,” he added.
Cherargei contrasted Murkomen’s performance with that of his predecessor, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, crediting Kindiki with effectively containing insecurity in volatile regions. “During Kindiki’s tenure there was a lot of containment of insecurity in the country, but Murkomen tenure now machete gangs are marauding, terrorist attacks from Turkana & North Eastern kenya and our villages are now insecure including my Kapsabet Town where a person was killed less than 200 metres from Kapsabet County Police headquarters,” he stated.
Since assuming the Interior docket in December 2024, Murkomen has faced a series of security crises. Bandit attacks in the North Rift have resulted in over 30 deaths this year, prompting the deployment of thousands of security personnel.
The nation has also witnessed a surge in terrorist activities, with a recent Al-Shabaab attack on a police camp in Garissa claiming the lives of six officers.
This heightened insecurity has led the United States to issue travel advisories for the region.
Adding to the complexity, administrative officers and National Police Reservists have been targeted, with several still missing. Accusations of political and security officer involvement in fueling insecurity have further complicated efforts to restore order.
Amidst growing public anxiety, Murkomen’s critics allege that he prioritizes political engagements over addressing the pressing security crisis.
