Secret Teams Working Behind Scenes for Gachagua-Kalonzo 2027 Coalition
Weeks after his removal from office, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is moving strategically to form alliances aimed at unseating President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.
Gachagua, replaced by former Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, is now focusing on building a coalition with key opposition figures, including Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa.
Reports indicate that both camps have deployed teams of four representatives each to lay the groundwork for a powerful political coalition. The technical committee, tasked with negotiating the alliance’s structure and strategy, has been working discreetly, meeting under strict secrecy to avoid state interference.
Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo confirmed the ongoing discussions, saying, “We have our teams, and the former deputy president has his team; it is a work in progress.” However, he withheld further details on the progress of these talks.
With his expulsion from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) underway, Gachagua is exploring options to either acquire an existing political party or register a new one.
Insiders speculate that the former Jubilee Party, still officially led by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, may be a vehicle Gachagua could utilize. However, some suggest that Gachagua may reconcile with Kenyatta, forming a unified front in Mount Kenya.
Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, a staunch Gachagua supporter, expressed confidence in Gachagua’s prospects, remarking, “We are working on broad-based approaches as we explore available options to secure a resounding political comeback following his irregular ouster.” According to Gakuya, Gachagua is consulting with leaders from various sectors to re-establish his influence.
In parallel, Gachagua’s team is crafting a messaging strategy aimed at maintaining his relevance without triggering further opposition from government entities.
Public appearances, including church services and community events across Mount Kenya, are part of this strategy, designed to project his continued connection with his support base.
Dismissing claims of interference, DCI Director Amin Mohamed emphasized, “The DCI operates within the rule of law and refrains from interfering with individuals’ liberties.”
Meanwhile, Gachagua hinted at his 2027 ambitions, encouraging the youth to secure ID cards in preparation for the next election. “I’m talking to a lot of people,” he told his supporters. “When the time is right, I will tell you.”
Lawyer Ndegwa Njeru noted, “Opposition leaders need to work with Gachagua; such a combination will form the next government.”
