Sabina Chege Takes a Stand on Impeachment Plot Aimed at Deputy President Gachagua
Nominated MP Sabina Chege has made a bold stand in support of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, amid swirling rumors of an impeachment plot.
A recent report by The Standard revealed that a clandestine meeting on the night of July 27, held at the residence of a CS nominee, involved 21 MPs discussing a potential impeachment motion against Gachagua.
The grounds cited for this drastic move include allegations of the Deputy President undermining the presidency.
In a candid interview on Inooro TV, Chege expressed her disapproval of the rumored impeachment efforts. “The Mt Kenya Kingpin is Rigathi Gachagua because he has the highest rank politically. I want to say that I would not sign [the impeachment motion],” Chege asserted firmly.
Her comments came in response to the question of why some leaders are targeting Gachagua when President William Ruto has called for unity and incorporated opposition members into his cabinet.
Chege highlighted the irony of the situation, questioning, “We have supported Azimio’s Raila Odinga for the African Union Commission chairperson position, brought ODM members to cabinet, does it mean that it’s only our own who has done so much wrong that we want to remove him from office?”
She lauded Gachagua for his efforts in uniting the region despite criticisms from fellow Mt Kenya leaders, who accused him of fueling tribal politics.
Chege also addressed the broader implications for President Ruto, noting that the current discord mirrors the challenges Ruto faced during his tenure as Deputy President under former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“If it’s true, it would be very unfortunate. I pray that President Ruto has not come to such thoughts because he himself went through the same thing when he deputised Uhuru. At first things seemed well until those surrounding Uhuru began talking ill of the DP,” she lamented.
Moreover, Chege questioned whether Ruto’s inclusion of four ODM members in his cabinet was a strategic move to either unite the nation or dismantle the opposition.
“If the president could include opposition members to his cabinet, this move either means he wants to unite the country or to finish ODM completely,” she speculated.
