Ruto Issues Bold Response to Church After Cash Donation Rejection
President William Ruto has vowed to remain steadfast in his commitment to supporting religious institutions, despite recent pushback from the Catholic Church over his donations.
Speaking during an interdenominational church service in Kericho County on Sunday, November 24, Ruto reiterated that his generosity stems from personal conviction, not political ambition.
“We are going to give for the building of the church and God’s work because we are a product of giving ourselves,” Ruto declared. “Our salvation is a product of giving. It is God who gave first, and that is why we have the privilege to know Christ and believe in Him. He gave His only begotten son so that today, we can equally be saved.”
Ruto addressed criticisms indirectly, referencing the decision by Bishop Philip Anyolo of the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi to refund donations he and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja made to the Soweto Catholic Church on November 17.
Anyolo stated that the contributions violated the Public Fundraising Appeals Bill 2024, which mandates permits for such fundraising activities.
“We have absolutely no apologies to make as we give to God. We understand the word of God enough to know that it is more blessed to give than to receive,” Ruto said. “I have built churches for over 30 years, and I have never lacked because I know the secret of giving and what it does. I am a product of giving.”
To reinforce his commitment, Ruto pledged Ksh 15 million to improve education facilities in Kipsitet, Kericho County.
Bishop Anyolo, meanwhile, maintained that the Church must preserve its integrity. “The Church is called to uphold integrity by refusing contributions that may inadvertently compromise its independence,” Anyolo said. He also urged political leaders to address critical national issues rather than using religious platforms for self-promotion.
Despite the rejection of his donation, Ruto’s resolve remains unshaken, underlining his belief that giving is a biblical mandate.
