Ruto: I Won’t Hand Over Power to ‘Bitter, Disorganised’ Opposition

President William Ruto has taken a jab at the Opposition, accusing its leaders of being disorganized, bitter, and solely focused on ousting him from power rather than tackling Kenya’s urgent challenges.

While speaking on Sunday at Kivaywa Comprehensive School in Lugari, Kakamega County, Ruto called out prominent Opposition figures like Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, Fred Matiang’i, and Martha Karua. He asserted that they lack a clear plan for the nation’s development.

“All they say is ‘Ruto must go.’ But how does that fix problems in healthcare, education, or farming? They’re full of anger and have no plan. We cannot trust such leaders with the future of our country,” he stated.

The Head of State has made a strong commitment to keep his development promises, warning that any attempts to hinder his progress will be met with a firm response.

He also promised to kickstart important infrastructure projects in Kakamega County, focusing on roads, access to clean water, and electricity connections. Ruto pointed fingers at previous administrations for the delays, citing poor planning as the main culprit.

However, the President chose not to address the recent murder of blogger and former teacher Albert Ojwang, a tragic event that has sparked public outrage and calls for justice.

Several leaders, including Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, and Senators Boni Khalwale and Godfrey Osotsi, have urged Ruto to take a stand and ensure accountability.

Governor Sakaja condemned the killing, which is said to have been carried out by police, and shared that he has provided a job for Ojwang’s widow in Nairobi and purchased land for her family in Homa Bay.

“But as much as we help the family, we can’t bring him back. Justice must be served, and no one should be protected,” Sakaja said. He stressed that while peaceful protests are a right, violence disguised as demos would not be accepted.

Governor Barasa raised a valid point about why Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat, the one who lodged the complaint that resulted in Ojwang’s arrest, hasn’t faced any consequences himself.

“Mr President, I believe you don’t protect wrongdoers. Let everyone involved face the law,” Barasa urged.

Peter Salasya also pressed for clarity on why three police officers, who reportedly took Ojwang to Mbagathi Hospital, were let go without any charges.

In the meantime, Gachagua suggested that the Opposition is uniting to put forward a single, formidable presidential candidate to challenge Ruto in the 2027 elections.

“Ruto is trying to divide us, but we’re solid. We will beat him. We’re asking Kenyans to help us remove him through the ballot,” Gachagua said.

In a strong statement, the Kenya Coalition of Church Alliances and Ministries expressed their outrage over Ojwang’s death, labeling it a national tragedy. They emphasized that this incident has tarnished the reputation of the police force.

During a visit to Ojwang’s family, Vice Chairman Bishop Stephen Mutua called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to expedite their investigations, not just into Ojwang’s case, but also into other unresolved killings of young people.

“We want IPOA to dig deep into this case and others like it. Any officer found guilty must be punished,” said Bishop Mutua.

He also urged Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to permit peaceful protests without any fear, but he cautioned the demonstrators against turning to violence.

“Young people must speak out within the law. That’s how we protect our right to protest and prevent more deaths,” he added.

The church group further called on President Ruto to spearhead reforms that would help restore trust in the police and ensure they adhere to the Constitution.
