Ruto Ally Hussein Tene Debasso Declines NYS Job Offer Citing Personal Reasons

In a surprising move, Hussein Tene Debasso, a close ally of President William Ruto, has declined a recent appointment to the National Youth Service (NYS) board.

The decision, announced shortly after his appointment was made public, has stirred discussions within political circles about the motivations behind his rejection.

Debasso, the former chairperson of the Kenya National Trading Corporation (KNTC) board, was appointed to the NYS board through a Gazette Notice issued on October 15, 2024.

The appointment, intended to run until February 2026, came after Ali Sahal Idris was removed from the position. However, Debasso’s rejection of the offer has added a layer of intrigue to the president’s efforts to consolidate key leadership roles.

In a statement confirming his decision, Debasso expressed gratitude for the recognition but cited personal reasons for declining the role.

“I, Hussein Tene Debasso, immediate chairman, Kenya National Trading Corporation, wish to thankfully acknowledge my appointment as member of the Board, National Youth Service via Gazette Notice of 15th October 2024,” his statement read in part.

He further disclosed that he had formally communicated his decision to the president. “Owing to personal reasons, I have written to the President of the Republic of Kenya declining the appointment,” he stated.

Debasso’s decision comes after his controversial removal from the KNTC board, a move that had sparked speculation about internal disagreements within Ruto’s administration.

While his reasons remain undisclosed, political analysts suggest that the rejection might reflect broader challenges in managing appointments in key state agencies.

This latest development adds to the growing scrutiny over President Ruto’s appointments, which have occasionally faced criticism for either overlooking regional representation or alienating allies. Debasso’s decision, seen as a bold statement, underscores the complexities surrounding political appointments in Kenya’s public service.

As of now, the presidency has not issued a response to Debasso’s rejection. The position on the NYS board remains vacant, leaving questions about who might step into the role.
