Rebecca Cheptegei: Ugandan Athlete Set on Fire by Kenyan Boyfriend Dies in Hospital

In a shocking and heart-wrenching turn of events, Rebecca Cheptegei, a celebrated Ugandan Olympic athlete, has tragically passed away following a horrific attack by her boyfriend in Kenya.

Cheptegei, who had recently represented Uganda in the women’s marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics, succumbed to the severe injuries she sustained after being set on fire.

The brutal incident occurred at Cheptegei’s residence in Trans Nzoia County, Kenya, where she had been living and training.

According to reports, the assault was carried out by her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, during a heated argument. Ndiema allegedly ambushed Cheptegei as she returned home from church, dousing her with petrol before setting her ablaze. The vicious attack left the athlete with burns covering over 80% of her body.

Despite the best efforts of medical professionals at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Cheptegei’s injuries proved too severe. She died just as arrangements were being made to airlift her to Nairobi for specialized treatment.
