Political Storm: Gachagua Mocks Raila’s Potential Alliance with Ruto
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has downplayed the significance of any potential alliance between President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, asserting that it would not add political value to either leader.
Speaking to Kamba media houses on Wednesday, February 26, Gachagua suggested that Raila risks tarnishing his long-standing political legacy should he choose to side with Ruto ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Gachagua emphasized that while Raila has the right to make his own political choices, aligning with Ruto would do little to strengthen his position. “We don’t understand Raila Odinga. If he decides to soil the legacy that he has built over the years by supporting President William Ruto, that’s his right. We can’t stop him,” he stated.
Despite acknowledging Raila’s political independence, Gachagua argued that such a move would not be beneficial. He pointed out that some of the support Raila enjoyed in previous elections stemmed from his alliance with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Without Kalonzo’s backing, he suggested, Raila’s influence would dwindle in key regions such as Ukambani, Kisii, and the Mt. Kenya region.
According to Gachagua, President Ruto’s popularity has already declined significantly, citing growing discontent from various quarters, including the church, salaried professionals, and Generation Z voters. “He’s been deserted by everyone. The church that had been initially supporting him has withdrawn its support. People of Mt. Kenya, people with payslips, and the Gen Zs have abandoned him,” he claimed.
Gachagua further asserted that even if Raila were to throw his weight behind Ruto, it would not guarantee the president a second term in office. “He would have lost his votes in Kisii and Mt. Kenya. So he is not going to be of much benefit to William Ruto,” he remarked.
With political realignments gaining momentum as the 2027 elections approach, the question remains: will Raila Odinga indeed join forces with President Ruto, or will he chart his own path? Either way, Gachagua remains adamant that the tides are turning against Ruto, regardless of any alliances he may seek to form.
