Political Deadlock: ODM and Kenya Kwanza Clash Over Key Parliamentary Seats
Kenya Kwanza and ODM are at odds over the control of crucial parliamentary committees, sparking a major standoff.
At the heart of the dispute is the leadership of the Budget and Appropriations Committee (BAC) and the Finance and National Planning Committee, both of which play a key role in shaping the country’s economic policies.
Initially, Kenya Kwanza was open to handing over the BAC, currently chaired by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, to ODM. However, tensions rose when ODM also demanded control of the Finance Committee, led by Molo MP Kimani Kuria, a trusted ally of President William Ruto.
In an attempt to ease tensions, Kenya Kwanza has agreed to let ODM take charge of four other parliamentary committees—Transport, Health, Energy, and Labour—without any dispute.
“We have agreed that our colleagues in ODM take up the leadership of the four departmental committees but leave BAC and Finance to us,” a Kenya Kwanza MP stated.
Amid the deadlock, Kenya Kwanza is pushing for a leadership swap between Ndindi Nyoro and Kimani Kuria, ensuring both committees remain under their control.
To address the crisis, Raila Odinga has summoned Minority Leader Junet Mohamed and Minority Whip Millie Odhiambo to Dubai for urgent talks. Their meeting aims to break the stalemate and secure a favorable outcome for ODM.
