Petition Filed with Trump to Deport Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika
A Kenyan citizen, Evans Kimori, has formally requested U.S. President Donald Trump to deport Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika.
This plea stems from growing concerns over her extended stay in the United States, which has allegedly left a significant void in Nakuru County’s leadership.
Kimori argues that Governor Kihika’s prolonged absence has severely hampered governance and the provision of essential public services. Elected in August 2022, Kihika is believed to have been receiving maternity and newborn medical care in the U.S. for nearly five months.
While Kenyan law allows for up to 90 days of maternity leave, her extended absence has created a leadership vacuum. This situation has left many residents struggling to access vital medical services, particularly after the closure of War Memorial Hospital.
The closure of War Memorial Hospital, a longstanding healthcare facility, has compounded the residents’ problems. This closure occurred despite court orders mandating its reopening. Residents, including mothers, children, and those with chronic illnesses, are now without crucial healthcare.
Kimori points out the disparity between the governor’s access to advanced medical care in the U.S. and the suffering of her constituents. He believes her continued stay abroad reflects a neglect of duty, especially considering her substantial salary.
He has therefore implored President Trump to intervene and facilitate Kihika’s return to Kenya. This intervention, he argues, is necessary to restore accountable leadership in Nakuru.
The residents of Nakuru, Kimori stresses, deserve a leader who upholds their trust and democratic mandate. Kihika’s prolonged absence undermines this trust.
Speculation about Kihika’s whereabouts intensified after photos surfaced, showing her in the U.S. with Millicent Omanga. Her tenure has also been marked by legal challenges, including disputes over county service management and environmental issues.
In February, the Environment and Land Court ordered Kihika to either serve a six-month jail term or pay a Ksh2 million fine for contempt of court. This related to unlawful waste disposal into Lake Nakuru.
More recently, on March 20, Nakuru residents petitioned the county assembly to investigate Kihika’s prolonged absence. They have given the assembly two weeks to provide answers.
