Pay-Time? Mwengi Mutuse to Replace Ndindi Nyoro in Budget Committee Overhaul
In a dramatic reconfiguration of parliamentary leadership, Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse is emerging as the frontrunner to chair the influential Budget and Appropriations Committee in the National Assembly.
This development, part of a sweeping shake-up, comes as the government aims to solidify its legislative agenda amid shifting political allegiances.
Mutuse’s star has risen significantly since his pivotal role in impeaching Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua—a bold move that showcased his political acumen. As the architect of the historic motion, Mutuse has gained immense respect within government circles, elevating his prospects for the chairmanship.
However, the decision is not set in stone. Sources close to the presidency indicate that President William Ruto is weighing regional political considerations, particularly the dynamics of Mt. Kenya politics. Molo MP Kuria Kimani is reportedly being considered for the same position, should regional interests take precedence.
“If regional balance dictates otherwise, Mutuse could be offered the Roads and Transport Committee, a critical docket currently led by Ndia MP George Kariuki Macharia,” a source close to the presidency disclosed.
This potential transition follows a turbulent chapter for Ndindi Nyoro, the current Budget Committee chair. Nyoro, a vocal Ruto ally and MP for Kiharu, faced backlash for his perceived lack of neutrality during the controversial impeachment proceedings. His silence on the matter and other key issues, such as the Finance Bill 2024, raised questions about his effectiveness.
The shake-up extends beyond Mutuse and Nyoro, with several other prominent MPs ousted from key committees. Among them are Gathoni Wamuchomba, James Gakuya, and Nimrod Mbai, reflecting a broader strategy to consolidate loyalty and effectiveness within parliamentary leadership.
Should Mutuse assume the chairmanship, it marks a pivotal moment for the National Assembly, potentially reshaping Kenya’s budgetary framework and financial oversight.
His appointment would underscore the influence of bold political maneuvering in shaping governance and legislative priorities.
