Outrage in Ruiru as Radiographer Charged with Raping Patient at Plainsview Hospital
A 26-year-old woman’s visit to Plainsview Hospital in Ruiru took a harrowing turn after she accused a radiographer of sexually assaulting her during a routine medical consultation.
The incident, reported on November 16, has ignited public outrage and raised questions about patient safety in healthcare facilities.
The victim, who sought gynecological advice, paid a consultation fee of Sh2,000 and was referred for a pelvic scan. The assigned radiographer, identified as Robert Kiplangat, allegedly advised her to remove her lower garments for the procedure.
Disturbingly, he returned to the room with two bananas, claiming the hospital lacked appropriate equipment, and proposed an unorthodox method involving a condom.
The victim told police she felt an unusually painful contraction during the alleged transvaginal test, prompting her to turn around. To her horror, she found Kiplangat partially undressed. Her screams alerted hospital staff and other patients despite the room being locked.
Following the incident, the victim filed a report at Ruiru Police Station under OB No 59 of 16/25. A medical examination conducted at Ruiru Level 4 Hospital corroborated her claims, leading to Kiplangat’s arrest.
He was arraigned at Ruiru Law Courts on November 19, where he denied the charges. Despite being granted bail of Sh200,000, he remains in remand at Thika Prison, unable to meet the bond conditions.
Ruiru Sub-County Police Commander Alex Shikondi confirmed the arrest, stating, “The rape incident claim at Plainsview Hospital was indeed brought to our attention by the victim, and we swiftly acted. The suspect was arraigned and denied the charges.”
The victim has appealed for psychological support and legal representation while urging the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) to investigate the incident. Plainsview Hospital has yet to issue a formal response, despite being contacted for comment.
The scandal has drawn parallels to past cases, such as the infamous Dr. Mugo wa Wairimu case, underscoring the need for stricter regulations in private healthcare facilities.
