Outrage as Police Call for Public Help to Investigate Accident Involving Ruto’s Convoy
The Kenyan public expressed widespread anger and frustration on the National Police Service’s (NPS) X account after the police requested assistance in investigating a fatal accident involving President William Ruto’s convoy.
In a public statement released on Thursday, March 13th, the police asked for public input to aid their investigation into the incident that occurred at Adams Arcade along Ngong’ Road.
The statement confirmed that a government vehicle was involved, resulting in the death of a foreign pedestrian. “The National Police Service is now handling the matter and investigations have commenced,” the statement read.
“We encourage anyone with information that may assist in the investigation to report to the nearest police station or through our toll-free numbers.” Police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga also appealed to both pedestrians and drivers to be extra careful in order to prevent future accidents.
Many Kenyans responded to the NPS post with skepticism, questioning why the police needed public help when they were already aware the vehicle belonged to President Ruto’s motorcade.
Citizens inquired, as user “Pillows and Duvets” posted, “It’s so sad that the presidential motorcade has an ambulance but it never bothered to attend to the old mzungu.”
Other users such as “Ekal Lowoto” simply asked, “Government vehicle involved??”, while “Billy Richards Koech” criticized the statement for being a “blanket statement instead of taking action against the president’s motorcade.”
“Paul Davies” queried, “Oya, what investigations when you already know it is a government vehicle that hit the person?”
“Daniel Ominde” suggested, “This should have been a letter to Statehouse.”
“Omuchero” asked, “Have you recorded a statement from the president’s handlers?”
“Izoh” questioned, “What information do you want? The car responsible.” and “Aliofatuma” asked, “Investigate what when you just confirmed it was a govt vehicle.”
An eyewitness at the scene provided details of the accident, stating that the foreign national was struck by Ruto’s motorcade while it was en route from Lang’ata to Kibra, during the president’s fourth day of touring Nairobi.
The witness described the incident as grim, stating the vehicle did not stop after the fatal collision. Bystanders attempted to assist the victim, but he had already died from his injuries.
Videos circulating online showed the deceased lying motionless, surrounded by a large crowd.
At one point, the victim was covered with a Maasai shuka, and his shoes and cap were placed beside him. This tragic event has triggered a wave of public outrage, with many Kenyans criticizing the convoy’s actions and accusing the government of negligence.
