Orwoba Issues Statement on Widely Circulated Nighttime Image with Matiang’i
Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba has set tongues wagging after she was seen at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on April 18, 2025, receiving former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i upon his return to the country.
Photos of Orwoba standing among a group of leaders at the airport quickly went viral, drawing questions from political observers and netizens. Many were especially intrigued because Orwoba was nominated to the Senate by the ruling Kenya Kwanza Coalition, while Matiang’i has long been associated with the opposition.
In an interview on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, the senator addressed the issue, clarifying her reasons for attending the late-night reception and shedding light on what the gesture may signal about her political direction.
Clarifying Her Actions
Speaking to a local radio station, Orwoba explained that she received an invitation to be part of the group welcoming Matiang’i. She chose to honor the call, not out of political alignment, but as a gesture of regional unity.
“I was called and told Matiang’i was arriving, and that leaders from the region were encouraged to show up,” she said. “I went to the airport to welcome a leader from my community. I believe in appreciating our diversity.”
A Political Statement With Purpose
Beyond simply honoring an invitation, Orwoba admitted that her appearance at JKIA was strategic. The senator said she intended to send a message: she is ready to collaborate with any political leader who supports women’s empowerment, regardless of political affiliation.
“I know people said I was making a statement. And yes, I was. I’m ready to work with anyone who supports the passion I have for women’s empowerment,” she asserted.

Voicing Her Frustrations
Orwoba did not hold back when speaking about the issues she has been championing since joining the Senate. She expressed frustration over the lack of action on key women’s issues, such as femicide, maternal health, and access to sanitary products.
“I’ve been speaking out about femicide, about Linda Mama not working, about the lack of sanitary pads in schools, and nobody is listening. I’m shouting because those are the reasons you saw potential in me,” Orwoba said.
She pointed out that despite being chosen as an advocate for the women-focused parts of the Kenya Kwanza manifesto, she has been met with inaction.
Looking for Real Allies
Orwoba made it clear she is actively seeking allies who are serious about addressing women’s issues. She emphasized that her loyalty lies not with political factions, but with those who are committed to real change.
“I’m looking for anyone—any leader—who’s willing to ensure sanitary pads are free for school girls, to stop femicides, and to fix maternal health care. That’s where my focus is,” she declared.
While Orwoba didn’t confirm whether she plans to work with Matiang’i ahead of the 2027 elections, her appearance at the airport and subsequent statements have fueled speculation about her political trajectory.
Having recently been reinstated in the Senate after a suspension, Orwoba appears determined to carve her own path—one grounded in advocacy, not allegiance.
