“Only Crooks Died!” – MP Sparks Fury as He Trashes Gen Z Protesters Killed in 2024 Demo Bloodbath

Gatundu North MP Njoroge Kururia has made some bold statements about the 2024 Gen Z protests, asserting that those who lost their lives during the demonstrations after storming parliament were nothing but crooks.

In an interview with Kameme TV on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, the MP stood by the police’s actions during the protest, insisting that peaceful demonstrators were not harmed.

“It’s the crooks who stormed Parliament and forced their way inside. Those were not peaceful protesters, those were criminals. It’s only crooks who were killed,” he said.

Kururia pointed out that the protests had been taken over by violent groups who seized the opportunity to loot and wreak havoc. The MP also mentioned that no women were among those who lost their lives that day, even though many women were actively participating in the protest.

“There were no women among the dead. Yet women were all over town that day. You have to ask yourself, who were the ones throwing stones at people with guns?” he asked.

“Those who were there peacefully went home safely,” Kururia added.

He also pointed out that a number of shops and businesses were damaged during the protests.

Murkomen’s sentiments

Kururia’s comments came just a day after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen stated that in any civilized society around the globe, those who stormed parliament would be labeled as terrorists. Speaking on Monday, June 16, 2025, Murkomen emphasized that such an invasion should not be seen as a form of protest.

“I am yet to see a media house that calls out all those who invaded parliament. In any civilised society in the world anyone who invaded parliament would have been called a terrorist, but here in Kenya, we are still saying peaceful protesters invaded parliament,” Murkomen stated.

“How can invasion and peaceful survive in one sentence? You have seen protests in other parts of the world people marching peacefully and making their statement and that is why part of the law that we are proposing is to create an opportunity for public order to give people the space to do protests in an environment that is peaceful,” he insisted.

June 25 tribute gains momentum

A nationwide remembrance is set for June 25, 2025, to honor those who lost their lives during last year’s demonstrations.

Opposition leaders, including Wiper Party’s Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, have teamed up with human rights organizations to call for a mass stay-at-home protest.

They’ve declared this day a symbolic public holiday, encouraging Kenyans to skip work as a way to pay tribute to the Gen Z protesters who were tragically killed during the unrest in 2024.
