Okiya Omtatah Denies Calling for Martha Karua and Jeremiah Kioni to be Probed Over Limuru III
Busia Senator Okita Omtatah has strongly refuted claims that he called for legal action against the organizers of the Limuru III meeting, which was attended by prominent leaders from the Mt Kenya region.
The denial comes in response to a statement circulating on social media, purportedly from Omtatah’s office, which the Senator has flagged as fake.
The contentious letter alleged that Senator Omtatah had accused NARC party leader Martha Karua, Jubilee party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, National Chairman of the Kikuyu Council of Elders Wachira Wa Kiago, and other members of the Kawmene Kenya Unity Forum of violating the law.
According to the letter, these individuals were purportedly inciting Kenyans to breach the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Act.
“It is my view that the words uttered by the organisers and the participants of the Limuru III event were intended to incite feelings of hatred, hostility, violence, and discrimination against ethnicity,” the letter read.
“And therefore committed an offence under section 62 of the NCIC Act. Violation under Section 3, 11, 13 must also be investigated in line with the egregious statements made that day.”
The letter further claimed that Omtatah had threatened to initiate legal proceedings if the NCIC did not act within 48 hours against the individuals mentioned.
The Limuru III meeting, held on May 17, gathered leaders from at least 10 counties in the Mt Kenya region. A key outcome of the gathering was the selection of former President Uhuru Kenyatta as the Mt Kenya political kingpin.
Speaking on May 21, Kioni justified Uhuru’s selection, stating, “If you look at the traditional leadership, there may be division. However, people respect Uhuru. Politicians have various opinions but people respect him.”
The meeting did not occur without controversy. Before its commencement, several leaders, including former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria, accused Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of attempting to interfere.
The event also faced opposition from leaders allied with President William Ruto, such as Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah and Nyali MP Mohamed Ali.
“Politics of regional and ethnic balkanization have been passed by time. As leaders of this country, we want politics of ideology. Politics that will unite Kenyans as one united people in pursuit of prosperity,” Ichung’wah declared after the meeting.
Senator Omtatah’s prompt dismissal of the fabricated statement underscores the heightened political tensions and the spread of misinformation in the current Kenyan political landscape.
