Nyeri Residents Take to Streets in Fierce Anti-Ruto Demonstration
There was chaos in Nyeri Town on Wednesday, November 4, as residents clashed briefly with police in a series of confrontations.
Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa, joined by Nyandarua Senator John Methu, Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu, and MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, had gone to Nyeri Town to present themselves to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). During their visit, a gathering with residents nearly escalated into violence when some attendees became unruly, directing their anger toward the police.
Videos shared by Kenyans.co.ke showed frustrated youth chanting anti-government slogans and attempting to force the police to leave the scene. Addressing the crowd, Senator Thang’wa criticized the police, accusing them of trying to disrupt the meeting.
“We want to tell the police, we respect them. We know who has sent you. We are not interested in you but the big fish who sent you,” he said, eliciting loud applause and cheers.
On the same day, allies of Rigathi Gachagua, including Wamuchomba, accused authorities of using intimidation to target supporters of the former Deputy President.
“Why are all politicians who were there not asked to record police statements?” Wamuchomba questioned. “We are feeling unsafe. We cannot call each other with normal phones because they are tapped. We are afraid because we don’t know what is being planned around our lives.”
The incident followed the DCI’s recent decision to summon Senator Thang’wa over chaos that erupted during a funeral in Limuru, reportedly involving tensions linked to Gachagua.
Reacting to the summons, Senator Thang’wa labeled the move as an act of intimidation by the State but affirmed his willingness to comply. In a statement issued a day later, he expressed his frustration over the situation.
“They refuse to meet us at the CID headquarters on Kiambu Road but summon us to Nyeri over an incident that occurred in Limuru. This intimidation will neither intimidate nor silence us. See you in Nyeri,” he stated on November 29.
Despite Gachagua’s political struggles since his impeachment, Senator Thang’wa and MP Wamuchomba have consistently stood by his side.
