Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo Faces Second Impeachment After MCA Tables Motion
Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo is facing another impeachment challenge, with proceedings set to begin on Tuesday, September 10. This will be the second attempt to remove him from office, following an earlier effort in October 2023, which he narrowly survived.
The County Assembly of Nyamira has approved the impeachment process initiated against Nyaribo, signaling heightened tensions within the county’s political landscape. In a motion seen by skynews.co.ke, the County Assembly Speaker gave the green light for the notice of motion to be heard at 2:30 p.m. on the scheduled date.
The impeachment notice was tabled by Evans Juma, a Member of the County Assembly (MCA), who cited “gross violation of the Constitution of Kenya” as the basis for the motion. The governor faces accusations of abuse of office and gross misconduct, putting his leadership under intense scrutiny.
Governor Nyaribo previously escaped an impeachment in October 2023, when 16 MCAs voted in favor of his removal, while 18 opposed it. The close margins indicated significant division within the County Assembly, a division that seems to have deepened over time.
The governor’s leadership has also come under fire from the residents of Nyamira County. In August 2024, a group of residents filed a petition seeking to disband the entire devolved unit of the county, accusing it of failing in its service delivery mandate.
Among the charges leveled against Nyaribo is his alleged drawing of a hefty Ksh 6.5 million monthly salary. The governor defended the figure, explaining that it included “pending arrears from his tenure as deputy governor.”
Nyaribo’s rise to power came after the untimely death of his predecessor, Governor John Nyangarama, on December 18, 2020. Nyaribo, then deputy governor, was sworn in as acting governor, completing the late governor’s term as per constitutional guidelines. He went on to successfully defend his seat in the 2022 elections.
However, the growing discontent against his administration has once again placed him in a precarious political position.
