NPS Addresses Reports of Kenyan Officer Missing on MSS Haiti Assignment
The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed that a Kenyan police officer is missing following a recent ambush in Haiti. This incident occurred amidst the ongoing Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission.
“The National Police Service has been notified that a Kenyan Police officer serving under the Kenyan-Led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti is missing,” the NPS stated.
Details surrounding the officer’s fate remain unclear. The NPS has neither confirmed nor denied reports of fatalities, but emphasized that a joint search and rescue operation with the Haitian National Police is underway.
“The MSS, in collaboration with the Haiti National Police, is actively conducting a search and rescue operation to locate the missing officer,” the NPS added.
The ambush occurred on Tuesday, March 25th, around 4:30 pm. Gang members capitalized on an armored vehicle becoming trapped in a ditch along the Carrefour Paye-Savien Main Supply Route.
Reinforcements from Pont-Sonde, in the form of two MSS Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles, were dispatched but also became immobilized, leading to a coordinated attack.
MSS spokesperson Jack Ombaka confirmed the missing officer, noting that gunfire erupted during the rescue attempt. Casualty details remain sparse, though reports indicate injuries among gang members, with potential fatalities.
This latest attack follows the death of Constable Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai in Ségur-Savien last month, marking the mission’s first Kenyan casualty.
Despite these challenges, the NPS commended the Kenyan officers for their commitment to stabilizing the volatile Caribbean nation. Kenya has deployed approximately 800 officers to Haiti, with the most recent group of 100 arriving on February 6, 2025.
