Nine Names in the Race to Replace Kindiki as Interior CS
The Ministry of Interior has remained without a substantive Cabinet Secretary for a month following Kithure Kindiki’s elevation to Deputy President.
Speculation has been rife as political insiders and analysts debate who President William Ruto might appoint to the powerful position.
Among the frontrunners is Joseph Boinnet, a former Inspector General of Police and the current Deputy National Security Advisor. Boinnet’s extensive experience in national security and intelligence makes him a strong contender, with his name circulating in influential security circles.
Aden Duale, the current Cabinet Secretary for Environment, is another potential nominee. Known for his proximity to the President, Duale’s appointment would signal loyalty over controversy. However, his past demotion from Defence to Environment could influence public perception of his candidacy.
The current Interior Principal Secretary, Raymond Omolo, is also in the spotlight. Omolo’s advocates highlight his administrative experience and alignment with President Ruto’s strategy of including opposition leaders in governance.
Kipchumba Murkomen and Davis Chirchir, serving as CSs for Sports and Transport, respectively, are viewed as potential insiders for the position. Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru has hinted at an “inside plot” favoring one of them due to their close ties with Ruto and significant past roles.
The Kikuyu Council of Elders has backed Mutahi Kagwe, a former Health CS, citing the region’s need for representation in the Cabinet. “The absence of a Nyeri minister must be addressed,” the elders emphasized during a recent meeting in Nyeri.
Opposition-linked Junet Mohammed has also been floated, with ODM MP Peter Kaluma asserting, “The Luo community deserves the Interior docket as defenders of human rights.” However, Junet has publicly dismissed these speculations.
Finally, Kimani Ichung’wah and Kanini Kega have surfaced as wildcard options, with Ichung’wah strongly denying interest and Kega reportedly being pushed to ensure regional balance.
Currently, Musalia Mudavadi is holding the position in an acting capacity as the President deliberates his final decision. The next appointee will face the formidable task of addressing security, governance, and public trust.
