Natembeya Under Fire as Senator Exposes Shocking Drug Shortage in Trans Nzoia Hospitals
Trans Nzoia Senator Allan Chesang has launched a scathing attack on Governor George Natembeya’s administration, accusing the county of presiding over a worsening crisis in public healthcare facilities due to persistent shortages of essential drugs.
Speaking during a public gathering on Saturday, April 19, Chesang claimed that the county government has failed to deliver much-needed medical supplies, leaving residents to suffer while hospitals operate with empty shelves.
He used the platform to throw his full support behind the Social Health Authority (SHA) and the national government’s Taifa Care initiative, describing critics of the program as political opportunists who are derailing meaningful healthcare reforms.
“Anyone who has ever fallen ill and been treated under this program knows it works,” Chesang said. “Let’s not be fooled by those pushing false narratives. The program is effective and saves lives.”
The Senator accused some leaders of maliciously undermining SHA’s credibility, even as citizens continue to face health service delivery issues due to county-level mismanagement.
Chesang argued that while SHA has brought positive outcomes in many parts of the country, its implementation in Trans Nzoia has been lackluster, blaming it on the county government’s reluctance and inefficiency.
During the Easter weekend event, which was part community outreach and part political rally, Chesang distributed food items to thousands of residents and initiated an SHA registration drive. The dual-purpose event aimed to bring immediate relief to the community while raising awareness about the health program.
He also announced plans to spearhead county-wide SHA enrollment campaigns, especially in remote regions where access to medical services remains limited. He pledged to deploy mobile clinics to these areas to not only distribute medicine but also register more residents into the Taifa Care system.
“If you see me personally delivering medicines, it’s because I understand the pain you’re going through,” Chesang stated, taking a veiled jab at Governor Natembeya’s leadership.
This renewed offensive highlights the ongoing political tension between Chesang and Natembeya—a rivalry that has been escalating steadily. The two leaders have often clashed publicly over governance and accountability issues.
Previously, Senator Chesang accused the county of mismanaging Ksh800 million earmarked for development projects, arguing that the funds have not translated into tangible benefits for the people.
In contrast, Governor Natembeya has recently made headlines for alleging that his life is in danger due to his criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration. Speaking during a seed distribution event in Kaplamai ward, he claimed he was targeted by government-sponsored individuals at the funeral of former IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati.
These incidents paint a picture of a deeply divided leadership in Trans Nzoia, where political showdowns are becoming increasingly frequent, with healthcare emerging as one of the primary battlegrounds.
As Chesang steps up his campaign for improved healthcare access through SHA, the county’s political dynamics are likely to become even more intense in the months ahead.
