Nasibo Kabale: Videos of Ex-NTV Journalist Living in the Streets Spark Uproar
Videos of former Nation Media Group health reporter, Nasibo Kabale, living in the streets have sparked widespread uproar, with many Kenyans expressing shock and concern over her current situation.
The footage, which has gone viral, shows the once-prominent journalist raggedly dressed, barefoot, and clutching a knife, as she recounts the harrowing circumstances that led her to homelessness.
Nasibo, who rose to fame in 2020 for her thorough and insightful coverage of the Coronavirus pandemic, now lives on the streets and relies on begging for survival. In one of the clips, she is seen holding a knife, explaining that she uses it for self-defense.
“Here you must sleep with a knife beside you because anyone can come at night and attack you,” she shared, giving a glimpse into the perilous life she now leads.
The former journalist revealed that her downward spiral began when she was diagnosed with depression while working at the Nation Media Group. She shared that the pressures of reporting on death and illness had a significant toll on her mental health.
“It happened that the company dismissed people from the office but fortunately I was among the five that were retained. But the job became challenging after I began witnessing people dying. It disturbed me,” Nasibo explained.
She also disclosed that at one point, her mental state deteriorated to the extent that she considered ending her life. “I left Nation Media because of depression but at Standard Group, I quit because of a meagre pay,” she recounted, highlighting how her mental health struggles and financial difficulties pushed her over the edge.
Despite her hardships, Nasibo still believes in her abilities and dreams of a second chance in journalism. “I never applied for a job; the employers just admired my effort and granted me chances at their companies. If given the opportunity once again, I would execute the duties to my level best,” she said with a glimmer of hope.
The disturbing videos of Nasibo Kabale’s plight have ignited conversations around mental health and support systems for journalists in high-stress roles, leaving many questioning how someone so accomplished could fall so far.
